Sometimes individual snacks can come together to create an even more tasty snack. That’s the case here. Four items, all of high snack potential, become one.
It’s so delicious that you probably need to portion this snack out ahead of time so things don’t get out of control!
I found all of these items in my pantry, and I’ve got the perfect ratio of ingredients here for you.
Why make your own trail mix?
Here’s why I like the idea of making my own trail mix:
- cheaper than buying premade
- can put in what I want
- you can customize to fit any diet
Is it cheaper to make your own trail mix?
I have not tested this, but generally yes, it is cheaper to make your own trail mix.
It may cost more to buy all the individual ingredients, but you’ll end up with a much greater quantity overall. That makes the price per ounce lower than buying a package of premixed trail mix.
How long does homemade trail mix last?
The great thing about trail mix is it’s pretty shelf stable and should last for a few weeks depending on how fresh the dried fruit is and when you open the package.
What’s in this Tropical Dried Fruit Trail Mix?
Here are the 4 ingredients in my Tropical Dried Fruit Trail Mix:
- unsweetened dried mango – I get this from Imperfect Foods. More below!
- unsweetened dried pineapple – I get this from Imperfect Foods. More below!
- unsweetened coconut chips – Found at Costco a couple months ago. You want to find crunchy coconut chips, not shaved coconut for baking.
- roasted & salted pistachio nutmeats – I got these at Trader Joe’s, but any store with bulk bins should have them. Make sure to get shelled pistachios (aka nutmeats)! Go for salted to give this mix some contrast after those sweet dried fruits above.
Is dried fruit healthy?
In my opinion, dried fruit is healthy in moderate quantities as long as it is made without any added sugar.
Eating too much dried fruit can be considered unhealthy due to the relatively high amount of carbohydrates, which is why it might be a good idea to portion these snacks out ahead of time!
How do you make the Tropical Dried Fruit Trail Mix?
Mix the ingredients alllllll together. That’s how!
If you wanna be next level prepared, take the time to portion out the big bowl into individual containers so you can grab and go (to the couch). Time saver and portion control all in one. I used these Half Pint Wide Mouth Mason Jars (affiliate link!) for this task.
Where do you get dried fruit?
The unsweetened dried mango and pineapple are from Imperfect Foods, a weekly grocery delivery service I am LIVING for in these current times.
Imperfect specializes in sourcing ugly or surplus produce and delivering to your doorstep, instead of to the landfill. I’ve been using this service for around two years now. It’s proving most vital right now!
The mango and pineapple used in this recipe were both “too dark from sun exposure to be sold in stores”. Dry it, chop it, I’ll still eat it!
Imperfect Foods delivers in the West South Central region, Midwest, Northeast and all along the West Coast, and they’re constantly growing.
If you’d like to give Imperfect Foods a try, here’s my referral link. Disclaimer: If you use this link, we’ll both earn $10 off our next order!
What containers can you use to portion the Tropical Dried Fruit Trail Mix?
I like to use these Half Pint Wide Mouth Mason Jars (affiliate link!) for portion single serve snacks. This is what’s pictured!
I also think Stasher Silicone Food Storage Bags (affiliate link!) would work if you have enough of them!
