DIY Flavored Tuna Packets 5 Ways

Yield: 2 servings 1x
Prep: 10 minutesTotal: 10 minutes

These DIY Flavored Tuna Packets are even better than the store-bought version, homemade with less than 5 ingredients each! One can of tuna makes two flavors, so mix and match your favorites like lemon pepper or garlic herb!

Scale:

Ingredients

Pick two flavors per 5-ounce can of tuna. Half a can of drained tuna weighs about 2 ounces.

Lemon Pepper

  • 1/2 (5-ounce) can albacore or yellowfin tuna packed in water, drained
  • juice from 1/2 lemon (~1 1/2 tablespoons)
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
  • pinch of salt (optional)

Sweet Heat

  • 1/2 (5-ounce) can albacore or yellowfin tuna packed in water, drained
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon Sriracha
  • 1/2 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
  • pinch of salt (optional)

Buffalo

  • 1/2 (5-ounce) can albacore or yellowfin tuna packed in water, drained
  • 1 small stalk of celery, finely diced
  • 1/2 tablespoon Frank’s Red Hot buffalo sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
  • pinch of salt (optional)

Garlic Herb

  • 1/2 (5-ounce) can albacore or yellowfin tuna packed in water, drained
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
  • fresh chopped parsley (optional)
  • pinch of salt (optional)

Chili Lime

  • 1/2 (5-ounce) can albacore or yellowfin tuna packed in water, drained
  • juice of 1/2 lime (~1 tablespoon)
  • 1/8 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
  • pinch of salt (optional)

Instructions

  1. Divide tuna: One (5-ounce) can of tuna makes TWO flavors. Open and drain can of tuna. Use a scale or eyeball it to divide the can of tuna into two even portions, one for each flavor you choose.
  2. Add flavorings: To each portion of tuna, mix in the ingredients based on the two flavors you have chosen:
    • Lemon pepper: 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil, pinch of salt (optional)
    • Sweet Heat: 1 teaspoon honey, 1 teaspoon Sriracha, 1/2 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil, pinch of salt (optional)
    • Buffalo: 1 small finely diced stalk of celery, 1/2 tablespoon Frank’s Red Hot buffalo sauce, 1/2 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper, pinch of salt (optional)
    • Garlic Herb: 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning, 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil, fresh chopped parsley (optional), pinch of salt (optional)
    • Chili Lime: ~1 tablespoon lime juice, 1/8 teaspoon chili powder, 1/2 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil, pinch of salt (optional)
  3. Serve & store: Serve flavored tuna immediately with crackers or add to a meal prep container with lid and store in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Notes

Bonus flavor options (less tested but still worth a try):
hickory smoke: 1/8 teaspoon liquid smoke + 1 teaspoon olive oil
bacon ranch: 1/2 teaspoon Ranch seasoning + 1 heaping tablespoon bacon bits + 1 teaspoon olive oil
dill pickle: 1 roughly diced dill pickle + 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder + 1 tablespoon pickle juice + 1/2 teaspoon olive oil

If your tuna is packed in oil, don’t add any additional oil and try to remove most of it. You can save this oil for cooking.
